Seltjarnarnesbær, Seltjarnarnes — Iceland

The Municipality of Seltjarnarnes, who is one of seven municipalities that form the Reykjavik Capital Area, will by the end of 2006 be the first municipality in Iceland to have 100% fibre connection to every building, home and firm.

Seltjarnarnes took the lead in FttH development in Iceland late in the year 2004 by signing a collaboration agreement with Reykjavik Energy to finish “the last mile” and deploy fibre to every household, building and firm in the Municipality in less than 24 months, without additional cost for the inhabitants. The project is in last stages and the area is “lighting” up. The Municipality sees the fibre deployment as a great opportunity to provide a robust infrastructure which will help to enhance the Municipalities basic services and create a thriving environment for education, culture and small, emerging businesses and other.

Iceland is emerging as one of leading broadband nations and has been among the top four countries with highest broadband penetration for some time now. The Icelandic broadband market is small but technologically advanced, providing modern services for its highly urbanised and prosperous population. Currently there are several FttH projects running and according to Reykjavik Energy’s plans the company will connect around 90.000 homes directly to fibre in the next five years.
