Manchester signs up as new member to INEC

During the opening of the Broadband Cities Dave Carter, on behalf of Councillor Neil Swannick, and INEC's chairman Hans Tijl signed the agreement on Manchester's accesion to INEC as a member and member of the INEC board. The signing of Manchester is a next step in a broader representation of cities around the globe who endorse the concept of open

networks to foster prosperity in areas of social inclusion, economic growth and sustainable development.

Our vision is that “the Manchester city-region will create the most advanced ‘next generation’ connectivity in the UK, providing a sustainable base for high growth business, innovation, transformational public services and an inclusive knowledge society”.

The main objective is to support a dynamic and sustainable world class digital economy in the North West with the Manchester city-region at its core. This will require strategic investment in “next generation” digital infrastructure and connectivity (fibre and wireless):

  • to ensure that the city-region economy is as ‘future-proofed’ as possible in terms of its ability to compete as a world-class player in the global digital economy;
  • to generate a leading exemplar of how creating next generation connectivity will give Manchester the competitive ‘edge’ it needs to sustain growth, especially in key sectors, e.g. digital, creative and media, and to maximise local benefit by connecting the needs of the wider community to the opportunities created by this investment and growth.
