Here is a quick scan on the Top 5 largest FttH projects within the EU today, conducted by SCIN. In separating Fact from Fantasy, SCIN researched multiple media & news sources in order to get a reliable view on FttH progress and real connections deployed. Here are the results:

European top 5, FttH Connections

 

 

1) Stockholm: 264.000 Fiber connections in homes (STOKAB; active + inactive)

 

2) FastWeb (Milan + extensions into other Italian cities)

Fastweb network takes 10MB into the home or office, handling today approximately 8 million Voice over IP calls a day and supports over 376,000 subscribers, 165.000 FttH customers

 

3) Västerås metro Network (Sweden): 30.000 houses connected (end of 2004)

 

 

4) Nuenen + Eindhoven (The Netherlands): 15.000 connections by mid 2005

 

5) Pau Broadband Country: Up to 60.000 FttX connections once roll out complete (Several thousand connections 'live' in test area today)

 

Players to look out for in 2005 + 2006:

 

-Larger Swedisch communities (other than Stockholm)

 

-Several Dutch cities (including Rotterdam, Almere and Enschedé; Further extension of the Nuenen/Eindhoven network)

 

-Rapid deployment of fiber backbones in France and the hybrid connections allowed for.
