Telecom Italia stepping up in the Netherlands?

Planet Multimedia reports that bbned, the Dutch wholesale unbundling operator owned by Telecom Italia, has bought InterNLnet, an ISP affiliated to Nijmegen University. InterNLnet's portfolio is geared toward both ADSL and FTTH networks. The latter include networks owned by Portaal (housing corporation) and GNA (Amsterdam Citynet), being teh main reason for acquiring InterNLnet.

EPB Launches $200 Million "Fiber To The Home" Initiative, North America-USA

The EPB board of directors unanimously approved the initiative to move into the cable TV business as part of a new "Fiber to the Home" initiative. EPB is already in the Internet service and telephone business and will expand those offerings.The "huge construction project" would cost about $200 million to build.

Nearly $16 Million For US Rural Broadband Service To Clarion, Eagle Grove, Goldfield, Humboldt And Renwick, North America-USA

Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) today announced a loan of $15,902,000 in rural development funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) for broadband access in Clarion, Eagle Grove, Goldfield, Humboldt and Renwick. Harkin is Chairman of the Senate Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry Committee.

US Jumps to 24th in Worldwide Broadband Penetration, North America-USA

Reversing a previous trend, the US moved up from 25th to 24th in broadband penetration worldwide in the first quarter of 2007 (see Figure 1). At the high end of the broadband spectrum, South Korea retains its lead over Hong Kong, Monaco, and Iceland in household broadband penetration. At current growth rates however, Hong Kong should pass South Korea in the summer of 2007 to become the leading nation in broadband penetration. Meanwhile, broadband penetration among active Internet users grew to 83.43% in US homes in June, up 0.2 percentage points from 83.23% in June 2007.
