Communities around the world have different approaches towards becoming smart, innovative and competitive. What works? And why? Does broadband deployment result in macro-economic growth? Should governments take a lead in e-community development or is this to be considered to be market interference? All this is only a small selection out of the many questions that have emerged within INEC Communities and beyond. Much research is currently being undertaken. European Municipality FttH and Fiber backbone projects

In Europe many cities and other local governments are involved with next generation networks. This fiber overview is compiled by Dirk van der Woude (Program manager FttH & broadband services, City of Amsterdam) and through Citynet connected to INEC. Dirk is a well known figure in the international community of broadband developments. His drive in the field of promoting open networks and real broadband deployment is an example to many municipal officials.

Kenniswijk: Final Report

As per September 30, 2005, the successful Kenniswijk Project in the Netherlands formally came to an end. The Kenniswijk project has produced more than one hundred innovative and/or broadband services. Further, Kenniswijk provided the location for the first Fiber to the Home infrastructure in the Netherlands thus creating an example and lessons upon other communities have been able to build since. As per today, the English language report of the Kenniswijk project and the lessons learned are published here.

Report: Broadband Services in G7 (and beyond)

Attached is a report (June 2005) on reseearch conducted in order to examine the market for sophisticated broadband services across the G71, Australia, Ireland, South Korea and Sweden. This report summarises Analysys’s findings on the performance of these countries regarding both the availability (coverage) and usage of sophisticated broadband services. The availability (coverage) data is estimated at the end of the first quarter of 2005. The usage data is estimated to the end of 2004. The report can be downloaded below.

If you just got used to thinking in terms of Gigabytes, than try to picture this: what would you do with 1000.000.000 Gig? For starters, it has a name. It's called an Exabyte. What anyone would want to do with an Exabyte is unclear. But by estimate it has been calculated that 5 'Exas' would be enough to store all words ever spoken by all human beings on earth.

New ITU Statistics on Global "Broadband" Penetration

 

ITU has just released its new statistics on global broadband penetration per 100 inhabitants as of 1 January 2005. Korea and Hong Kong, China have kept the top rankings they received in 2004. The Netherlands makes an impressive move from 9th in ranking in 2004 to 3rd this year.

European FTTH Developments and the Role of Public Private Partnerships
